Louth MP Sir Peter Tapsell appointed Privy Councillor

THE MP for Louth and Horncastle, Sir Peter Tapsell has been appointed in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list to become a member of the Privy Council on the recommendation of Prime Minister David Cameron.

Privy Councillors are entitled to view secret documents or be entrusted with secret information, without having signed the Official Secrets Act on what is known as ‘Privy Councillor terms’.

Sir Peter will now be given the prefix of ‘the right honourable’ when addressed in the House of Commons.

The Conservative MP, who took up his seat in 1966 and was knighted in 1985, commented: “It is the most pleasant surprise since I was awarded my house colours after a rugger match at my boarding school.”
