August was a successful month for the Ark Animal Rescue and Retirement Centre at North Somercotes.

The annual open day raised over £2,800 which will help the animals in the Ark’s care.

The Ark’s monthly report to supporters said: “The money raised will help us so much and in so many ways so, on behalf of every animal we will be able to care for, thank you for all the support and we look forward to seeing you all next year! It was an amazing day; we were blessed with the sunshine and the support of fellow animal lovers of all ages.”

Rehoming was also a great success last month.

The Ark said: “Nineteen of the 23 cats rehomed were kittens that had been unwanted and are now in happy loving homes.

“Many of the older dogs that come through The Ark do so owing to the owners being unable to care for them for one reason or another. Four examples of this are Kaine, a 12 year labrador, Lulu the 11 year Staffy, Indy a 10 year Staffy cross and Billy the 13-year-old Shih tzu.

“All four have found loving homes. Each dog has their own character and needs, particularly the older ones.

“Kaine loves people and animals around him; he now lives with three other dogs in a lovely family home.

“Lulu and Indy both preferred company to being left alone and have gone to owners who are retired and so always home.

“Billy was deaf, bless him, and so needed a children-free home as he could also be a tad grumpy, he has gone to a local couple who love everything about him.

“Three dogs rehomed had been with us quite some time and so we were especially happy to see them go to their ‘forever’ homes.

“Boris a nine year American bulldog cross had spent the last two years of his life in kennels.

“Lola a six-year-old deaf Staffy was returned to us in May because she kept escaping and so was not safe.

“Kilo a five-year-old female Staffy had been with us since October 2012 and just kept getting overlooked.

“All three loved children and have now gone to live in busy, happy loving family homes.”
