TWO students are on their way to holding the Olympic torch by getting through to the next stage.
Blake Munton and Rebecca Dunning, students at the Birkbeck School in North Somercotes, are both gifted achievers.
Blake was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2005 and has gone through a large amount of surgery.
He has remained positive throughout his treatment and takes part in every school event possible.
Rebecca is a naturally gifted sportswoman, being selected to represent the county at a number of events.
In 2010 she had a terrible injury when her horse fell on top of her and crushed her pelvis.
Hospitalised for three months, she returned to school against the advice of her doctors.
Headteacher Lynda Dobson nominated the duo to hold the Olympic torch when it reaches our region next summer.
She said: “You would have to go a long way to find more inspirational young people than Blake and Rebecca.”
Each of the students’ citations will now be read by a panel and a decision will be made around December whether they will get to carry the torch.
Rebecca is from Grainthorpe and Blake from Holton le Clay.
Blake said: “I hope I get the chance to carry the Olympic torch.” Rebecca described it as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’.
Miss Dobson added: “We may be a small school but we are proud of our achievements and our students.”
