Louth and Horncastle MP Sir Peter Tapsell has hit out at the failure to publish the Chilcott report into the war in Iraq.
At Prime Minster’s questions, Sir Peter asked when the report would be published and whether it was being “blocked”.
Sir Peter revealed he agreed with fellow parliamentarian Lord Hurd who said it was an “absolute disgrace” that the report had not been published. Sir Peter added: “Since it is absolutely well known by the cognoscenti that the report was completed many months ago, who - if the Prime Minster is helpless on this subject - is blocking it?
“Is it the Cabinet Secretary or Sir John Chilcott, or is it the White House?”
In reply, David Cameron accepted the report was largely finished but said the Government was in the process of writing to people criticised in the report, giving them an opportunity to respond. The Prime Minster added: “It is not within my power to grant the publication. It is independent and the process has to be finished.”
