‘Pool not viable’ - district council

DESPITE growing calls for a swimming pool in Mablethorpe, the East Lindsey District Council has once again moved to distance itself from any project.

A Neighbourhood Management meeting last Wednesday saw ELDC Chief Executive Nigel Howell speak on behalf of the council to local residents.

Although Tesco and in particular LB Mablethorpe have expressed an interest in building a pool, any project looks unlikely due to potential running costs.

ELDC Communications Officer James Gilbert said: “Our position hasn’t changed, we won’t build a pool and we won’t run one. A pool in Mablethorpe is not viable due to running costs and it wouldn’t get the level of use.”

Mablethorpe resident Val Corkell, a swimming pool campaigner, said: “We’ll have to wait and see what Tesco and LB Mablethorpe come up with. We’re not after an olympic swimming pool, we just want a pool.

“We knew times are hard, but people keep asking the question and an area this size needs a swimming pool.”
