Presentation by Young Carers at Cordeaux Academy

Cordeaux’s Year 11 student, Katy Garnham, joined Jade Bierley and Amber Spiers - representatives from Spurgeons (which supports young carers and young adult carers up to the age of 25 years) - to give a presentation in assembly on what being a young carer involves.

Katy spoke fluently with great compassion and honesty about the impact of young carers, and her own personal experiences, to pupils in Years 7-9.

Katy also supports Cordeaux’s Young Carers Group run by Teaching Assistants, Mrs Colban, Mrs Wilsea and Ms Reynolds.

The group meets every Thursday lunchtime when students can socialise, enjoy drinks and biscuits, get involved in activities and go on organised trips - recently the group went to the pantomime at the Riverhead Theatre.

Jade and Amber will be coming along to the session on February 13 to provide support, and offer one-to-one sessions to all members. Their aim is to come along to a session at least once a term.

To date, the group has eight members who are currently in the progress of making treasure boxes.
