THE new home of the long-established E H Thorne (Beehives) Ltd at the Beehive Works, Rand, was the venue for a visit by 27 members of the Barkwith and District Gardeners Association.
They spent an interesting evening enjoying a conducted tour of the premises, arranged by Les Robinson, as it is the Beehive Works busy season.
The members were welcomed by directors Paul and Gill Smith, who split the party, each leading a group around the large site explaining the production process.
They were assisted in various departments by members of staff who demonstrated some of the procedures involved including making beehives and other products.
They were also shown the retail shop where everything needed for bee-keeping can be bought, while much of what they manufacture is supplied nationally too.
The firm does not discard the waste sawdust and shavings but forms it under pressure to produce briquettes which are sold as an alternative to other solid fuels.
The chairman Sheila Minns thanked the hosts and members of staff who were on duty.
