Mayor’s New Year message

EDITOR – I wish everyone a happy New Year. May 2012 bring good health and happiness to you all.

I celebrated my 80th birthday in April. To find myself as mayor in May was a shock. I asked myself “Why me? Am I too old?”

I was mayoress in 2003/4 with my late husband John, so I did know what was expected of me.

A card I received on my birthday was of a donkey and the caption read ‘There is life in the old girl yet’, so I took on the challenge, and chain of office.

It is a challenge with six old members and 12 new, including myself.

I was an East Lindsey councillor for eight years from 2003 to 2011.

Many events have been attended to name a few: Kirkstead Crusaders presentation; civic services at Lincoln, North Hykeham, Gainsborough, Mablethorpe; RAF Battle of Britain; Spirit of the Marsh; Mablethorpe Show; Sutton on Sea Carnival; the switch-on of lights with Twist and Pulse; Theddlethorpe school fetes; new gardens at Trusthorpe and Harris Boulevard; Remembrance Sunday; Salvation Army carol service.

Looking forward to 2012, we may see our much-needed new sports centre being built, followed by what you all seem to crave, a Tesco supermarket.

My own wish is for a band stand in Queen’s Park for all ages to enjoy.

God bless you all.

Irene Burnett

Mayor of Mablethorpe
