Huge turnout for tennis tournament

ACES, clever volleys and thrilling rallies kept the crowds entertained in the sunshine at this year's 49th annual Sutton on Sea and Sandilands Tennis Tournament.

Huge numbers of people attended the two week event, which ended on Friday August 10.

Every year the tournament attracts around 200 competitors from across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire and beyond.

John Gregory, from the tournament's committee said: "The weather has been fantastic for us this year and it's been a great atmosphere. It is a real family based event, we run games for those aged eight up to 60 plus. We even have a married couple's mixed doubles game – which is unique to this tournament. "

One spectator at the Ladies' Doubles final said: "This is a real tradition in Sandilands, we have been coming here from Market Rasen every year for the last decade – we wouldn't miss it."

The tournament dates all the way back to the 1920s but was postponed for a number of years during World War I and World War II.

Organisers and competitors are now looking forward to the grand 50th anniversary of the tournament next year and say they are expecting it to be the biggest yet.
