ATHLETICS: No festive break for Mablethorpe’s dedicated runners

While the rest of us were indulging in Christmas dinner or celebrating new year several Mablethorpe runners continued with their schedule.

And the dedication certainly paid off for Rob and Shez Hawse.

The duo were of the 
70 competitors that turned out for the Cleethorpes 
park run and although not running personal bests, 
won both the men’s and women’s races.

Rob finished the 
course in just 18m 01s. Shez finished 13th overall in only 21m 07s.

The events are friendly timed but casual, free-to-enter 5km events are organised and staffed entirely by volunteers and are ran in parks and green areas all over the UK.

Cleethorpes Athletics 
Club are hosts to the New Year’s Day 10k on the town’s promenade.

This year an impressive 418 runners from near & far were up early in the morning to take the challenge along the seafront.

Longtime training partners Sharon Wheatley Margarson and Elaine Wilson from Mablethorpe Running Club were up to the challenge, Sharon finished 224th in 50m 59s, Elaine was 289th in 54m 55s.

The race was won by Matthew Bowser (Lincoln Wellington AC) who made light work of the course in 31m 53s.

The 1st Female was Natalie Burns (also of Lincoln) (16th overall) in an impressive time of 37m 43s.

The club meets at Mablethorpe Athletics Club on Sherwood Fields in Mablethorpe at 6.30pm every Monday and Thursday. Anyone, whatever your age or ability, will be made welcome.
