The eventing season finished in style for Lydia Norton when she represented the Midlands at the National Under 18s Finals at Weston Park.

A solid dressage performance and foot-perfect jumping from her six-year-old skewbald gelding Painted Moon, AKA Bob, saw the combination finish in 11th place overall in their first 1* competition, helping her team to victory.

The competition is part of the Festival of Youth and up to 10 riders are selected for each of the eight regions.

The top four riders’ scores for each team count towards the final score and to win the fiercely contested competition was a huge achievement for Lydia, particularly on such a young horse.

“It was by far the biggest cross country track we’ve ever faced, but Bob flew round like a pro and we finished bang on the optimum time,” Lydia said.

The Authorpe rider is trained by International eventer Rosalind Canter who was also competing at Weston where she had a convincing win in the open 1* competition on Pencoes Crown Jewel.

Lydia added: “Ros’ help has been invaluable throughout the season and I’m really lucky to have her nearby.”

She also wished to thank the Midlands team trainers for their support throughout the three-day competition, and her sponsors PCR Commercials.
