Maltby-le-Marsh brothers Sam and Robbie Hewson came within a leg of national glory in the County Gold Cup Doubles at Lakeside Country Club.

It was Sam’s second visit this year to the famous Frimley Green venue, having qualified for the BDO World Darts Finals in January.

Sam (22) and Robbie (19) won their local qualifying event at Gainsborough a few weeks beforehand and travelled down to Lakeside to represent Lincolnshire in the Men’s Doubles.

A total of 46 counties went into the draw and the Hewsons opened with a comfortable 4-1 win against Sussex.

In the second round, Nottinghamshire took an early 2-0 lead and checked out 139 in the first leg against the darts.

But strong darts from the Hewson brothers saw the boys take the next four legs and the match 4-2.

Pembrokeshire were their next opponents and more powerful scoring saw the Lincs pair win 4-2 once again.

Their semi-final against Cleveland was possibly the game of the day, and at 3-3 Cleveland had the darts to start the final leg.

Robbie’s first visit was a maximum 180 and elder brother Sam then followed with a 140 to get them to a finish after nine darts and edge what was a great game of darts.

They had to wait for just over an hour for the final against Cambridgeshire pair Denis Harbour and Eddie Martin.

The bull-up was a key factor with all players slightly below par and Cambridge taking it.

The first six legs went with the darts with Robbie popping in a 113 finish along the way, but the decisive final leg went to Cambridge, and the match 4-3.

But it was a great day for the local lads to be crowned Gold Cup runners-up, mirroring the achievements of the Lincolnshire ladies’ pair Paula Jacklin, from Gainsborough, and Shelly Bontoft-Gash, from Lincoln.
