Sam Hewson from Maltby won his first Professional Darts Corporation Youth Title at Wigan and picked up £1,000 in prize money in the process.

The 20-year-old’s 1st round match was against fourth seed George Killington from London, which turned out to be a cracking game. Sam came out winning this thriller 4-2, all games between 13 and 17 darts and a couple of 100 plus check outs.

Into the 2nd round and Sam progressed past Somerset’s Martin Walker with ease 4-1. The 3rd round match was against 32nd seed Dean Finn, where Sam quickly went into a 3-0 lead before Finn pegged it back to 3-3. Sam then stepped up his game to win 4-3.

Into the last 16 and another Londoner and joint fourth seed Lewis Venes. Sam once again powered onwards winning this one 4-2 with some strong darts.

The quarter final draw was just as challenging as second seed Josh Payne was his opponent. Josh won the bull and had a strong 1st leg to take the lead. The next four games were then below par but all went with throw. In the 6th leg Josh left himself a finish with Sam needing 101, which he checked out to square the match. Josh then had the darts in the final game and again left a finish with Sam again wanting the same score of 101. All three darts scored the same as the previous leg and Sam won this tight affair 4-3.

Sam had now knocked out three of the top five players and grew in confidence going into the Semi Final against 17th seed Matt Dicken, Sam was too strong and progressed to his second ever final, winning 4-1.

The final was against the Dutchman John De Kruijf, the tenth seed who had just beaten James Hubbard in the other Semi Final 4-2. However Sam was in the zone and far to strong winning 4-0 with a last leg of 13 darts.

Sam is now seeded sixth, which is his highest ever ranking place and would like to thank all current sponsors, ARG Plumbing of Louth, Focus Signs of Alford and Rick Howell of Mablethorpe for there on going valued support. Sam would also like to thank new sponsor Kirkstead from Trusthorpe.
