Kenwick Park’s men’s and ladies’ teams have made a terrific start to the season after both progressed to the fourth round of the Mail on Sunday national competitions.
The men won a close-fought home tie against Grimsby Golf Club 3-2 thanks to wins by Ashton Turner, Steve Ashby and Sam Done.
The ladies travelled to Woodhall Spa for their tie which proved even tighter.
After Birdie Dawson, Julie Harvey, Helen Sherratt, Lesley Burton and Andrea Smaggasgale had played, the match was tied at 2½-each.
Andrea Smaggasgale struck the ball really well in the sudden death play-off and took advantage of her shot at the third hole to defeat her opponent Cindy Ireland in a nail-biting finish.
* The first mixed stableford of the season produced a win for Alastair Harvey with 33 points on a countback from Steve Blackburn. Alastair’s wife Julie (14) came third with 31.
* The following day, only six teams of four braved the heavy rain and strong winds to play in a nine-hole Bank Holiday mixed Am-Am.
Ron Irwin, Nathan Price, Val Pattinson and Jean Sizer were made of strong stuff to finish six points clear of their nearest rivals with a score of 39.
Alan and Andrea Smaggasgale with Geoff Formby and Adrian Ellis were runners-up with 33.
* The ladies played a stableford competition on a bright, cold day.
Julia Sales was delighted to win the silver division with 33 points after walking 18 holes for the first time since her knee replacement last year. Mabel Blackburn was second with 27 on countback from Tracey Stobart.
Noreen Bradford continued her early season form by winning the bronze division with 34 points, while Jane Briggs was second with 30 on countback from lady captain Penny Buckley.
