Kenwick Park: In-form Hackett wins again at Captain’s Weekend

Scoring was tight at Kenwick Park Golf Club as competitors turned out for Steve Blackburn’s Captain’s Weekend.

Lewis Hackett is in the form of his life, and having recently won the Sir Henry Lunn Shield with his team-mates, Lewis scored 37 points to take the trophy.

Robert Wilson took second place on countback from Paul Dewhurst, also with 37, while Nigel Fearn was fourth with 36, also on countback, from Tony Draper.

The remaining five prize winners all scored 35 points with Billy Wright sixth, Freddie Fearn seventh, Chris Dixon eighth, Sam Bulcock ninth and Martin Peters completing the top 10.

John Payne (35pts) won the best seniors’ prize, and Nick Mountain won the best junior prize with 31.

Inn the mixed team event the following day, Alan and Andrea Smaggasgale with Helen Sherratt arrived to find one of their players had dropped out and they drafted in Sam Bulcock as a last-minute substitute.

This proved a very wise choice as they went on to win with 80 points on countback from Bob and Jane Briggs, Karl Koslow and Graham Jacklin.

Billy Wright, Tom Gladwell, John Beverley and Tracey Stobart were third with 79, and Karl Koslow won the men’s nearest-the-pin prize at the eighth, while Andrea Smaggasgale won the ladies’ prize at the 12th.

Steve Blackburn also celebrated his birthday on the Sunday and donated £10 to charity for all four birdies scored at the 18th, including one of his own.

* The ladies played their stableford competition in showery conditions.

Julie Harvey won the silver division with 30 points on countback from Lincolnshire Ladies’ Golf president Julia Sales. Allison Cook took first prize in the bronze division with 32, also on countback, from ladies vice-captain Penny Buckley.

* The senior men played a medal for the Transatlantic Trophy donated by a member from the United States, Doug Gordon.

Gerald Brook won with 85-14=71 on countback from Karl Koslow with 80-8=71. The men’s captain Steve Blackburn took third spot with nett 72 on countback from Malcolm Bood, seniors’ captain Ron Irwin and Charlie Hickman.
