Louth Indoor Bowls Club: Over 60s undone by strong Sleaford finish

Despite winning on two rinks and drawing on another, Louth Indoor Bowls Club’s men’s over 60s team lost on aggregate by 108 shots to 80 in their County League match at Sleaford last week.

The rink of Colin Smith, Mal Hewson, Tony Saunders and Colin Matthews started well and remained comfortably in front to eventually win 21-10. George Willoughby’s rink of Charlie Briggs, Peter Schofield and Barry Fox looked in control at 17-7 ahead after 12 ends, but their opponents won the next four ends to take a one-shot lead, but the Louth four won the final three ends for a 22-19 win.

Horace Cope’s rink got their noses in front by three shots on the 13th end and held a one-shot advantage going into the final end before Sleaford grabbed a shot for an honourable 18-18 draw.

The aggregate score was only seven shots in Sleaford’s favour after 16 ends, but they picked up 32 shots to Louth’s 11 over the last five ends to win at a canter.

* The men’s A team had little trouble seeing off a visiting Stamford B team on Saturday afternoon, winning on all five rinks to clam maximum points with a 148-59 shot victory.

The only tricky spell came on John Welsh’s rink where the Sleaford four led 13-6 after 10 ends, but the Louth rink won the next five ends, to storm in front and went on to win 25-17.

The best winning margin went to the rink of Colin Smith, Keith Kelly, Roy Tear and Horace Cope who won 36-10. The three other winning skips were Tony Musson (27-7), Allan Dent, Snr. (32-13) and Simon Reeson (28-12).

* In the club leagues, John Williams and Marion Rose maintained their 100 per cent record in Division Three of the Friday Mixed Pairs with an important 15-13 win over Paul Radford and Sue Gurbutt.

It kept them one point ahead of Gordon and Brenda Clark who won 18-13 against Briggs and Malcolm. Peter and Joan Hill are third after they grabbed four shots on the last end against R and J Sparnon to win 15-12.

* Half A Mo made it seven straight wins in the Mixed Fours with a 19-13 victory over Barracudas to stay two points ahead of SOS who easily overcame Falcons 30-6.

* On Saturday afternoon from 3pm England international players Ellen Falkner and Amy Gowshall will be at the club to show off the range of Aero bowls. Free raffle tickets are available with every purchase of food and drink.
