Louth Indoor Bowls: Mixed A beaten at Boston

Louth Indoor Bowls Club’s Mixed A team’s first away trip of the County League winter season ended in a 119-96 aggregate shot defeat at Boston.

There was just one rink success for the visitors with Alan Watson, Mal Hewson, Val Sherry and Joan Stones coming good over the last four ends to overturn a four-shot deficit to win 24-19.

Colin Smith’s rink almost did the same after being eight shots behind with three ends to play, but fell short by two shots. There was a close tussle on Simon Reeson’s rink where the Louth club manager and former Boston member came up against his mother, but it was the senior family member who had the last laugh in a four-shot victory.

Simon Dent’s rink recovered from 15-4 down after eight ends to take a one-shot lead by the 13th end, but then it all went pear-shaped as the opposition plundered 18 shots over the remaining seven ends, including a six and a five, to win 34-21.

* Louth men’s over 60s enjoyed their second home match of the campaign as they beat Lincoln C 111-70, winning on four of the five rinks.

Mal Hewson had another good day on Louth’s best winning rink which won 29-9 with Colin Smith, Tony Saunders and Colin Matthews.

There were 11-shot wins for the rinks skipped by Keith Kelly and Horace Cope, while John Welsh guided his rink to a seven-shot win.

* They followed that up by beating Doncaster 90-58 in the first round of the Denny Cup, a national competition where each club plays two rinks at home and two away simultaneously.

Louth won on three rinks, the best margin being the rink skipped by Colin Smith.

* At club level, Cheekies retained their perfect record in the Newcomers League with a narrow 16-14 win over second-bottom Ditchers and now have a four-point lead over Pure Silk who lost 15-12 against Merrymen.

Avengers are still looking for their first points and went close in a keen tussle against Golfers before losing 11-9.

Fast Shippers also have a 100 per cent record in the Evening Fours after beating Roundheads 16-8 and have a two-point lead over Rockset who beat Questors 17-13.

Bottom team Wayouts got their first point in a tight scrap with Legends which finished 17-all.
