It may have been Mothering Sunday but for some Mablethorpe runners it was race day at Grantham (Newton’s Fraction) Half Marathon 2015.
This very popular event is now in its 10th year and reached full capacity long before the day.
Three Mablethorpe Running Club members were among the 430 that took part in this tough course with results as follows: Roger Blake finished 90th in 1h 37m 51s - a course best of six years - Lisa Musson was 362nd in 2h 11m 54s in only her second half marathon and in her first race of the year Selina Elson was 420th in 2h 31m 17s.
The race was won by Ian Bailey of Sleaford Town Runners in 1h 14m 46s. The first female back was Sian Thomas of Chiltern Harriers in 1h 23m 54s (17th position overall).
Mablethorpe endurance ultra runner Chris Rainbow travelled to Nottinghamshire to take part in the Third Grand Tour of Southwell.
Although 33 miles of tough and muddy off-road countryside taking participants through some of the best trails in Nottinghamshire, this is a low-key ethos event with the emphasis being on competitor self-reliance to find their way round. The course is marked and marshalled but competitors were provided with a map and they were expected to know how to use it.
There were 22 finishers and Chris came joint first, winning the event with Rob Jackson from Louth AC and setting a new course record of 4h 15m.
Mablethorpe Running Club is offering a gentle, free introduction to the joys of running with a couch to 5k programme. No matter how slow you go, it really doesn’t matter, you’re still lapping everybody on the couch.
It runs every Monday through March at the clubhouse at 6.30pm. Simply turn up, visit the website or call Paul on 01507 463580 for more information.
