THIS Sunday Sutton on Sea Cricket Club started their season with a friendly against Burgh. Sutton on Sea were asked to field first on a wicket cut only hours before the game started. However, the lack of preparation did not dampen the pre-season excitement of Sutton’s young squad.
A steady start was made by the Burgh opening partnership of Sharp (22) and Blackmore until A Simms consistent good line and length created the wicket of Blackmore (3), caught by a new addition to the team, Tom Poynton.
Wickets continued to fall regularly which left Sutton-on-Sea in a very strong position by the time drinks were bought to the middle.
The score was 87/8. However, Sutton were definitely not expecting P Bronks (45) and N Underwood (20) to create such a stand that would bring Burgh back into the game. They stroked Sutton’s bowling away with relative ease in the final overs to give a respectable total of 157.
After the break Sutton–on–Sea’s opening partnership of R Brant (47) and D Poynton (19) made 60 together before Sharp managed a breakthrough. However, the wicket bought L Simms (26) to the wicket who managed to maintain the scoring and with the support of his sister Aimee they managed to make sure the team was in a strong position by the final over. A Culley (23) was then set the task of two runs off the final ball to win. However, Culley didn’t hesitate or seem to be nervous at this task and boldly hit a six off the last ball to bring up Sutton on Sea’s first victory of the season.
Sutton thank Burgh CC for a good game, played in good spirit. The team would also like to make a special thank you to the ball sponsors, Woodcocks Butchers of Mablethorpe and kit sponsor DM J Drainage.
