FEW schools can claim to have such stars at Neil Armstrong, John Lennon, John F Kennedy and Charles Darwen adorning the walls of their corridors, but thank to the talents of its staff and students, Birkbeck School in North Somercotes can do just that,
Murals of inspirational people was the brainchild of Birkbeck teaching assistant Anna Hillam, a talented artist herself, who began to run art competitions at the school.
The mural craze then began with teahers and pupils keen to paint their own heroes, from Muhammad Ali and Stephen Hawkin to Marie Curie and Princess Diana.
Students have been encouraged to get involved and so far the response has been excellent.
The school ICT technician chose Windows chief Bill Gates as the subject of his piece, a film fanatic painted Alfred Hitchcock and a football-mad student went for three-time World Cup winner Pele.
A series of school assemblies is now being planned to raise awareness about the lives of the famous individuals Birkbeck students now walk past each day in school.
